Sorting descending brings the end of the alphabet to the top, which is useful when the values you care about cluster there — or simply to inspect a list from the other end.
Numeric strings sort oddly
Sorted as text, 9 comes after 10 because the comparison is character by character. Values that are numbers need a numeric sort rather than an alphabetical one.
Sorting groups similar values
Whatever the direction, sorting brings identical and similar entries together, which makes duplicates and inconsistent formatting visible at a glance.
