What appears first

Sorting shortest-first is the fastest way to see whether a list contains junk. Single characters and two-letter fragments cluster at the top where they are impossible to miss.
The opposite view
Longest first surfaces limit breaches and merged fields. Checking both ends of a list takes seconds and catches most structural problems.
