Why order by word count
In keyword data, word count approximates specificity. Fewest first puts the broad, high-volume, heavily contested terms at the top.
The shape of the list
Sorting this way makes the head-to-tail distribution visible as a gradient rather than a jumble, which is much easier to read than an alphabetical arrangement.
The other direction
Sorting most-first surfaces the long tail instead. Which end you want depends on whether you are looking at competition or opportunity.
