Where a maximum length matters

Filtering versus flagging
Removing over-length entries produces a clean list of values that will fit. Keeping them instead produces the list that needs rewriting. Both are useful; which you want depends on whether you are shipping or auditing.
Unusually long often means broken
Entries far above the threshold are frequently not long text but merged fields or malformed rows.
