This deletes any line where a specified string appears anywhere in it, and keeps everything else. It is the fastest way to strip a known unwanted category out of a list.
Match position does not matter
Unlike filters anchored to the start or end of a line, this matches anywhere. A line qualifies for removal whether the term sits at the beginning, buried in the middle, or right at the end.
Everyday uses
Dropping every URL containing /tag/ from a crawl export. Removing brand terms from a keyword list before competitor analysis. Stripping internal test pages that all carry the same marker in their path.
The inverse is often what you want
If the unwanted set is larger than the wanted one, keeping lines that contain a term is the cleaner operation. Same idea, opposite direction.
