This appends the number of words in each line to that line. Where character counts answer "will this fit", word counts answer a different question — how specific is this phrase.
Word count as a proxy for intent
In keyword work, length correlates with specificity. One- and two-word terms are broad and heavily contested. Four- and five-word terms are narrower, lower in volume, and usually much clearer about what the searcher actually wants.
Making the split visible
Measuring every line turns a shapeless keyword export into something you can segment. The head terms and the long tail separate cleanly once each row carries its own count.
Then sort or filter
Sorting by word count groups similar specificity together. Filtering isolates a band — everything with four or more words, for instance — as a starting set for long-tail content planning.
