Every keyword research project eventually lives in a spreadsheet, and getting the raw setup right before you start analyzing anything saves a lot of rework later.
The Excel Technique
Start with one column per data point you actually plan to use — keyword, search volume, competition, and a notes column — rather than pasting a wide, messy export as-is. Freeze the header row (View > Freeze Panes) so it stays visible as you scroll, and convert the range to an Excel Table (Insert > Table) so filters, sorting, and formulas extend automatically as you add rows.
Example Scenario
You've just exported 800 keywords from a research tool into a single messy column, with inconsistent spacing and a few stray blank rows scattered throughout. Before building a single formula, you paste the raw list into a scratch tab to clean it up first.
